Asian Para Games: Shutttler Bhagat wins 2 medals

Odisha para badminton player Pramod Bhagat added two more feathers to his cap by winning one gold and one bronze medal in the 3rd Asian Para Games, which was held at Gelora Bung Karno Sports Complex in Jakarta, Indonesia from October 6 to 13, 2018.

A 30-year-old shuttler from Atabira in Bargarh district, Pramod grabbed the gold medal in men’s singles SL-3 category, beating Ukun Rukaendi of Indonesia 21-19, 15-21, 21-14 in the final. He won four matches on his way to the final.

Pramod beat Duc Trung Pham (Vietnam) 21-11, 21-7 and Dong Jae Joo (Korea) 21-5, 21-12 in group stage, Umesh Vikram Kumar (India) 21-9, 21-11 in quarterfinals and Anh Tuan Trin (Vietnam) 21-17, 18-21, 21-9 in semifinals.

An employee of Employee State Insurance Corporation, Pramod secured the bronze in men’s doubles SL 3-4 category with Manoj Sarkar as his partner. They lost to Indonesian pair of Dwiyoko Dwiyoko and Fredy Setiawan 13-21, 19-21 in the semifinals.

In his Twitter handle, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Pramod for his achievements. ``Pramod Bhagat is an inspiration. He is outstanding as an individual and as a team-player,’’ said the Prime Minister.
